1. The "waste problem" of palm plantations in Malaysia: Palm leaves rot in the field, and feed costs are high
. Rahim (48 years old), a palm plantation farmer in Pahang, planted 5 hectares of palm trees and produced 50 tons of palm leaves every year. In the past, these palm leaves either rotted in the field to breed pests or burned to pollute the air. Completely a "burden":
a surplus of palm leaves: 10 tons of palm leaves per hectare of palm trees per year, Rahim's 5 hectares of land to deal with 50 tons per year, no place to put;
Feed costs are high: the family has 20 sheep, commercial feed costs RM2,000 (about US $470) per ton, and monthly feed costs RM1,000 (about US $235), accounting for 1/4 of the total income;
Manual processing is difficult: palm leaves are so tough that it takes two hours to cut a ton with a knife. Rahim has to rest for half a day after each cut, and his arm is too sore to lift.
2. A machine turns "burden" into "money": 1 ton per hour, saving cost and earning extra money
. Last year, Rahim bought a 9ZT-3.5 automatic hay cutter. Now his palm leaves have become "treasures":
easy handling of palm leaves: 220 mm wide feeding inlet and wear-resistant roller, easy handling of tough palm leaves, 1 ton per hour, 4 times faster than manual; Cost savings
on feeding sheep: palm leaves are free and cut up and fed to sheep instead of commercial feed, saving Rahim RM1,500 (about US $350) per month;
Earn extra money: Cut up the surplus palm leaves and sell them to the surrounding sheep farmers, earning RM50 (about US $12) per ton. 50 tons of palm leaves can earn RM2500 (about US $590).
Durable: 6 linear blades (available locally in Malaysia), used for more than a year without damage, low maintenance costs.
Third, the real use scenario of Malaysian palm garden: from "waste" to "make money"
palm leaves into feed: Rahim cut up palm leaves to feed sheep, saving 1500 ringgit/month feed money;
Selling processed palm leaves: Rahim sells surplus palm leaves to 10 sheep farmers in the vicinity, earning RM50 per ton and RM2500 per month; Centralized processing by
the cooperative: The Palm Garden Cooperative bought five sets to process palm leaves for 100 households in the surrounding area, and received RM30 per ton, with a monthly income of 15000 RM (about US $3,500), which led to the resource utilization of the entire palm garden.
